ARTICLES:

“Salvation Comes from America”: The United States in the Allgemeine Zeitung des Judenthums ~ Sonja L. Mekel
The Allgemeine Zeitung des Judenthums, established in 1837, was one of the most important and widely read Jewish newspapers ever published in Germany. Throughout its existence, the paper showed an enduring interest in the United States. This article argues that America, as portrayed in the Allgemeine, served as a model for an almost ideal civil society in the face of continuing anti-Semitism and political ills in Germany. At the same time, the example set by American Jewry presented German-Jewish readers with standards of behavior for emancipated Jews.

“But You Can’t See the Fear that People Lived Through”: Canadian Jewish Chaplains and Canadian Encounters with Dutch Survivors, 1944–1945 ~ Richard Menkis
Encounters between Canadian liberators and Dutch survivors have received little attention, although Canadian forces played a central role in the liberation of the Netherlands. This article analyzes that role largely through the eyes of two Canadian Jewish chaplains, Samuel Cass and I.B. Rose. Their emotional, intellectual, and practical responses gave rise to both individual and organized relief efforts. This paper also looks at homefront responses to the Holocaust, which suggest that certain decisions on aid allocation worked against Dutch Jews; as well, it examines the chaplains as religious leaders and teachers to their soldiers.
